What is AutoCAD? – Definition, Uses, Features and More

AutoCAD is an engineering software that has a variety of features which are used for designing and creating building structures. It helps to reduce the time required in the process of architectural designing. The main aim of the software is to aid engineers and architects in creating accurate plans for a structure and it also provides enough information that can enable one to make a decision. It enables one to create a model of any structure including houses, tunnels, bridges and more.

AutoCAD is an open source software that is widely used for designing and creating plans of buildings, skyscrapers and more. It is considered as the user-friendly software that is used for both commercial and residential projects. The software can be used for modeling, producing floor plans and designing of buildings. AutoCAD is ideal for both new and existing constructions. It includes AutoCAD Solid (automatic solid modeling) as well as AutoCAD CAM (online AutoCAD drawing).

AutoCAD is widely used to construct huge structures such as airports, space ships and hotels. The computer-aided design (CAD) software enables one to calculate various mechanical and structural elements of a construction and create accurate drawings with no errors. In addition, it helps in designing plans for particular structures. It is widely used by structural engineers in the field of civil engineering for building constructions and designing as well as by architects for planning and designing of buildings.

AutoCAD comes in different types and formats so as to satisfy the requirements of different types of clients. It can be downloaded from a number of websites on the Internet. These can also be bought from Microsoft’s website. However, to make them more useful, they need to be updated with the latest version of AutoCAD, such as the Windows version.

There are many software packages that are available in the market which provide the capability of designing as well as drafting AutoCAD drawings. Some of these are available free of cost, while others have to be purchased. Some of them have tutorials CDs available so as to train beginners in AutoCAD drafting. There are also online computer-aided training courses on AutoCAD, which enable students to understand AutoCAD in a better way. After completing the course, the student is able to generate AutoCAD drawings. These drawings can easily be distributed to a number of users who work in a similar industry for which the CAD software was developed.

The computer-aided design or autoCAD software enables one to produce real-time drawings and graphics that can hold accurate dimensions and are manipulated by multiple calculations simultaneously. AutoCAD provides various drawing and graph editing tools including AutoCAD drawing patterns, AutoCAD path tools, etc. There are also automated performance monitoring and control features available with the CAD programs. Most of these packages can be connected to an X-NET or Microsoft Networking environment. In order to save time and money, the computerised design and drafting needs to be able to meet the real-time requirements of customers. AutoCAD software fulfills these requirements.
